Cinderella is one of the most favorite fairytales in the world and I was curious how Katy Regnery would treat it in this retelling. I was pleasantly surprised that she took an alternative path with this story and she changed the rules writing something different than the usual.
Ashley was a little girl when she experienced the glamour life and its darkness when her mother was one of the most wanted models. After years of losing her mom in addictions and her sudden death, she is now living with her stepfather and his sons. She has never felt tenderness and love but her nightmare is getting even worse when she learns the evil plans her stepfather has for her.
With the help of her gay godfather she escapes and hides in the middle of nowhere. She is not alone though as there is her roommate, a man who wants nothing to do with her. She would like his friendship but the man keeps her far away.
Julian lives in isolation having learned not to trust women until the innocent blonde provokes him like no other. He is cautious towards her because he knows she is hiding the truth but there is something in her soul that makes him want to protect her.
This is a really different retelling of the classical story where there is pure evil and darkness and each character has their own flaws. There is no princess and no prince but two people who connect.
Ashley is a sheltered girl having almost no idea about the modern world and relationships. She is sweet, shy and almost timid. When her own mother has not shown her love, she is insecure and vulnerable but slowly she finds that she deserves more.
Julian is gruff at the beginning but you can see that he just avoids more hurt. Later on he shows that he is kind and protective.
This is a slow burn romance where the couple gets intimate really late into the story but as they are so young you don’t miss more. They are sweet together and there is instant attraction/ love.
I found fascinating reading the diary of Ashley’ s mom and although she has passed away she plays such an important role to the pace of the story.
I liked that the author did not follow closely the original story and the most important thing is that she offers part of her profits to a special non profit organization.
Katy Regnery knows how to twist the classical fairytales with a touch of darkness but she always leaves you with the perfect happily ever after. I cannot wait for her next book focused on one of my favorite books, the Ugly Duckling.
