Trailer Park Heart by Rachel Higginson is a slow burn romance full of angst, emotional turmoil and an incredible push and pull between the hero and the heroine.
Ruby was born and raised on the wrong side of the tracks with a neglectful mother and in a meddling community where gossip thrived. She was poor and the talk of the town so her only plan was to leave everything behind and start over but her plans changed after an eventful night.
Years later she is still stuck in the same place but she never allows anyone to make her feel bad about herself. She is keeping everyone away until the boy who always got on her nerves is back but now he is a man who makes her trailer park heart beat again.
Levi is a rich man and he has nothing in common with her. She has never forgotten him but after his disappearance for many years she has buried her crush and her secrets but now he keeps getting in her way provoking her.
This is not an easy love story. Ruby is hardened by her life circumstances so she is abrupt, isolated and sometimes harsh. She keeps a wall around herself and her fears are really understandable. Sometimes though I found her a little frustrating because she made things difficult for herself. She makes mistakes and her behavior is a little strange. Despite her faults I admired her strength and her tenacity as also her independence.
Levi is an honorable man. He never stops showing that he cares and how much he wants her. He is charming and kind. I loved his honesty and how much he faced everything head on.
There is a secret that keeps this couple away from each other so their relationship doesn’t progress until the end. I love strong heroines but Ruby pushes away Levi so much and behaves like he is her enemy so I found their love affair a little aggravating and I couldn’t always justify her animosity despite his openness.
I know we are always harder with women heroines who make mistakes so I have you know that I didn’t hate Ruby. She is just a realistic character with many good assets but also flaws.
I am not a fan of angsty books so that may be the reason I didn’t connect truly with this story but I am sure that for those who love to have their hearts a little tortured, this might be the book for you!
