Everyone loves Helena Hunting as a romantic comedy author but this book will make you love her even more. This is a new adult love story but with themes that go deeper. It is emotional, touching with lovely family dynamics and a forever relationship between two young people.
Kodiak and Lavender have been friends since childhood but their bond has always been unique. Sometimes though love can be toxic so they prefer to be enemies than be destructive to each other.
This book has a love story at its core but most of it , it is about mental health issues. Anxiety is crippling and this author shows it through the characters. This couple has many personal obstacles to overcome so it is admiring to see them making the right decisions. It is really difficult to choose to love your soul mate from afar than make him/her suffer and Kodiak and Lavender are really mature about their relationship. I liked the fact that they grow up and are logical about what is healthy and not a co-dependency.
Although, this book is long, it has more angst than romantic moments. I would have loved to see them more together as a couple.
Also, I was surprised to see Lavender show a completely opposite image as a sexual being. Throughout the book, she appears timid and shy but when the time comes she is sexually free and daring. I like seeing women ask for what they want in bed but it was like seeing two different people suddenly. She hates Kodiak for a while and they way she punishes him and then forgives him did not seem believable.
The secondary characters are so interesting that I would read a book for each one of them.
I love this side of this author and Little Lies has become one of my favorite books by her!
