The Reigning and the Rule by Calia Read is the second book of the Surviving Trilogy and it picks up exactly after the end of The Surviving Trace (My review). If I could characterize book 1 I would say it is about attraction and magnetism. The second book is all about a battle of wills. It has more angst, passion and mystery.
Serene is back in the present with a family she barely recognizes and her heart stuck into the past with Etienne. As she reveals more secrets, she goes back in time to find that things are not the way she has left them. Etienne will always be the love of her life but she soon realizes that her choices and her travels through time affect everyone.
Etienne and Serene play a dangerous game and they have to decide if their love is more important than everything else. Every little decision might alter the future so each of their actions must be accountable.
Serene remains the strong, independent woman who takes no prisoners. She will provoke, fight and get revenge in the name of love. Etienne shows a more vulnerable side of himself.
Their relationship is explosive and sexy. They both make mistakes and wrong choices that sometimes I didn’t understand but once again you can see that their love is inevitable.
This series so far is one of the most captivating ones I have ever read. I lost sleep, I didn’t eat and I didn’t get up until it was over. Now I feel a little lost because I don’t know how much we must wait until the last book!
